When the Portuguese left Goa, they left behind their culture, food, music, their unique zest for life and countless exquisite churches. The churches of Goa are today not just a reminder of the past but an integral part of the present. As important to the make up of the state as its happy, colourful people, dazzling golden beaches and the unique combination of sounds and smell. Some of the famous Goan churches are:
Se Cathedral: The largest church in Asia took more than 57 years to build. Dedicated to St. Catherine, this cathedral was designed by Julio Simao and Ambrosio Arguero in the Portuguese Gothic style. Designated as a heritage site by UNESCO, it’s one of the most important of the Goan Heritage Sites.
Church and Convent of St. Francis of Assisi: This centuries old church was closed by the Portuguese government in 1835. Today it has been reborn as a museum and contains countless interesting relics and pieces of art.
Basilica of Bom Jesus: It was the first church in India to be designated as a minor Basilica. It’s an all important shrine for the Catholics of Goa as the remains of their patron saint, St. Francis Xavier are kept here. A world heritage site, it’s a crucial part of Goa travel.
Church of Our Lady of Rosary: Mentioned in any Goa Travel Guide, it’s one of the oldest of the churches of Goa. Built in 1544, this is the place where St. Francis Xavier would teach Catholicism to the people of Goa. This church is an elegant but simple example of the Manueline style of Portuguese architecture.
Chapel of St. Catherine: The chapel was built by Alfonso de Albuquerque, the first admiral of Goa, to commemorate his victory. The architectural style is delightfully renaissance.
Church of Reis Magos: This church was built inside the Reis Magos fort. The main attraction of this church is the representation of the three wise men with the infant Jesus.
Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception: The exquisitely beautiful church was built in 1619. Its façade designed in the baroque style, imposing stairs, flanking towers, not to mention the incredibly beautiful altar make it one of the main attractions of Panjim.
Church of St. Catejan: This church has been inspired by the Basilica of St. Peter’s in Rome. And like the Basilica, it is as grand, as elegant and as sublime. No wonder it is one of the most sought after sights in old Goa.
