This church is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier who practiced his mission about 450 years ago in taluka of Tiswadi. Among all the Goan churches, this church follows great devotion all over Goa. In this church, the mortal remains of the saint are kept.

The church can be reached by the walking on a solitary road behind the gate of St. Paul’s College. The church is beautiful structure built in Dorian Style of architecture. Besides its structural beauty, the thing which attracts you the most towards this church is its sanctity, divinity and the mystic aura. Once you visit this church, you will experience a belief you may not have seen before.

Most of the churches of Goa are built according to European style of architecture and during the Portuguese regime. This church holds a great historical as well as religious importance. This is a plain chapel having only one altar andhas tiled roof. The roof is supported by the wooden rafters and walls are plastered with lime mortar.

It is believed that the chapel of the church was originally dedicated to St. Jerome or St. Anthony. St. Francis Xavier came to Goa in 1542 at the behest of St. Ignatius Loyola. He preached to neo-converts and uninitiated in the beginning. Then he headed Santa Fe Theology College in Old Goa, which is later known as the College of St. Paul’s. Then after eruption of epidemic in 1570, college got deserted and chapel also changed to ruins. In 1884, the present chapel was built again and was dedicated to the St. Francis Xavier. There is miraculous well in the church complex, said to have holy waters.

Body of Saint Francis is kept in a silver casket, built by the silversmiths of Goa. The Tomb of the casket of St. Francis is designed with patterns which are blend of Italian and Indian Art. Corinthian columns and the volutes are done with Indian art. Also the pyramidal form of upper portion of casket is designed according to the Indian art.

India Goan Churches are the finest examples of blend of European and Indian architectural styles.
