Second largest town of Goa, Margao is a bustling commercial centre of the state. Beside, crowd, noise and chaotic traffic, it also has few structures of architectural legacy of Portuguese. Located at a distance of 33 km from capital city Panaji, Margoa derived its name from two Hindi words, namely, “Math” (Hindu religious centre) and the “Gram” (Village).

It was a major religious centre of Hindus in the past. It was home to many wealthy temples and the dharmshalas. But during 17th century, many of these were destroyed by the Portuguese.

Margoa has an old world charm which attracts many visitors on their Goa tour. There are many Portuguese churches and the Old Portuguese houses with shady balcaos which are the example of their traditional; architecture.

Among the various tourist attractions in Goa, is the Church of Holy Spirits (the Largo de Igreja. It is located on the entrance of the city in the north of Municipal Garden Square. Beautiful Portuguese house, still in livable condition surround the church area. Built in 1675 by Portuguese, the Church is a fine example of late-Baroque architecture in Goa. It has the charming white façade and interiors are decorated with gilt crystal and stucco.

House of Seven Gables, located at a small distance from the church is counted one among the important sightseeing attractions in Goa. This is also known as the “Sat Burzam Ghor”. Only three of the seven gables are there at present but one can get the idea of its magnificence.

There is an excellent market Margao, stretching from south edge of the main square to the area near old railway station. You can buy many interesting things as souvenirs from this market. This is also good place for bargain shopping.

Municipal Garden, known as the Praça Jorge Barreto is located in the centre of the town. This garden is surrounded by many municipal buildings which were built in early 20th century. Fish market of Margao was a spectacular sight to be in as fisherwomen, dressed in colorful dresses used to hawk at the top of their voices.
