Pilar-goaIndia Tour Enquire

Located at a distance of 10 km from the state Capital of Panaji, Pilar is a village in Goa. Situated on the hill top, one can have the panoramic view of the Arabian Sea and the mountains all around. Pilar is an important village as it is the headquarters of the Missionary Society of St. Francis Xavier Pilar. This Society is commonly known as the society of Pilar. Pilar is visited by the pilgrims every Thursday who come to revere the bones of Fr. Angelo. He was the priest of the Society of Pilar known to live virtuous life.

According to the Goa travel guide, Pilar has the Seminary, school and the church offer the scenic view of countryside, the Zuari River and the harbor. These locations in Pilar offer beautiful

sightseeing attractions in Goa.

There are not many tourist attractions in Goa which are located in Pilar. But few of these are very important in terms of religious value. There were seminaries in Goa built by Portuguese. Out of the two surviving seminaries, one is located in Pilar. On the Monday of Holy Week, a magnificent procession of Saints takes place here.

This seminary is located on the small hill in the south of capital city Panaji. While you visit this seminary on your Goa tour, you will quite enjoy its tranquil ambience. Beside this, there is small museum designed in one room only which is worth visiting. This location also provides spectacular view of the countryside. This seminary is founded in Capuchin monks in 1613. Along with the church a centre of learning was established by them which was dedicated and named after Our Lady of Pilar.

Until 1835, this seminary flourished and after that Portuguese banned all religious orders in Goa except for the Carmalite Nuns. They managed this seminary till 1858. This Seminary became the headquarters of the Missionary Society of St. Francis Xavier in 1890. Post 1936, it was taken over by the Xavierian League.

The exquisitely carved doorway of the old church at the seminary attracts the attention of the visitors. Statue of St. Francis of Assisi is placed inside the niche above the doorway. Inside is the tomb of Fr. Angelo d´Souza.
