Delhi Tour InformationIndia Tour Enquire

Located in Chhatarpur District of Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Kahjuraho is a village. It is just at a distance of 385 miles from Delhi, capital city of India. Khajuraho is known for its ancient monuments. Due to presence of these monuments, Khajuraho is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Khajuraho was called as Kharjuravahaka in ancient times and it’s named after the Sanskrit word Khajur which means date palms. Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is visited by large number of visitors from all over the world. For lovers of history and people who take interest in ancient architectures and ancient monuments, a visit to Khajuraho should not be missed.

The main sightseeing attractions in Khajuraho are the group of famous Hindu and Jain temples. Temples of Khajuraho are famous for work of art, depicted on their walls and constructions. They are not just the work of art; rather they are the manifestation of a philosophy involving Indian aesthetics. Constructed during 9th to 12th century, these temples are the finest example of architectural genius of Chandela dynasty. Sculptures present at these temples depict the principles of Kama sutra, the erotic literature written in India.

This group of temples is unique of its kind in the entire world. By looking at the sculptures at temples there, one can easily understand the passion of Chandela dynasty for the forbidden art. These sculptures are made in Nagara style of Indo-Aryan architecture. These sculptures are set in stone, like a poem of passion and love. The temples are dedicated to the revered Hindu gods and goddesses, so these temples can not be treated as the cheap erotic constructions. Originally 85 temples were built. With the passage of time and due to weather conditions, only 20 of them have survived. Two main groups of temples, Eastern and Western groups are among the most famous tourist attractions in Khajuraho.

Khajuraho travel guide tells you an interesting legend behind the construction of these temples. In ancient times a beautiful Brahmin girl, Hemavati was seduced and ravaged by the Moon God, in a fit of passion. It resulted in the birth of Chandravarman who later founded the Chandela dynasty. Later, Chandravarman saw a dream, where his mother requested him to construct such temples which reveal the treasures of erotic fantasies and passion and its all aspects to the world.
