According to whatever info on Khajurahio is available, in ancient times, Khajuraho was known to be 'Khajur-vahika' or 'Khajjurpura'. This name was derived from the Sanskrit word ’Khajur’ means Date Palms. The region had numerous trees of Khajur. According to Chandbardai's Mahoba-khand, royal Priest of Kashi, Hemraj had a beautiful daughter, named Hemvati. Once when she was bathing in a lotus-filled pond on a summer night, Moon God got dazed by her beauty. He descended on earth in a human form and in a fit of lust and passion, he ravished Hemvati. When distressed Hemavati was going to curse him, he blessed her with a brave son who would later become king and would build great temples.
Later, Hemvati gave birth to a strong boy as promised by Moon God. Chandravarman was the name given to the Hemvati’s son. He was a very strong and brave boy and it is said that he could kill even a tiger by bare hands at the age of just 16 years. With the blessings of Moon God, he became a king and built a fort at Kalinjar. Once his mother came in his dream and requested him to build temples at Khajuraho. He did so and temples were built during 9th to 12th AD.
