Eastern Group of Temples in Khajuraho

The temple town of Khajuraho is a historically and culturally rich city. The temples of Khajuraho and its architecture is witness to the flourishing Chandela Dynasty of the region. Originally there were over 80 temples in Khajuraho, however only 22 remain till date along with some relics of other temples. In an eastern temple tour in Khajuraho, the temples showcase the passion, art, culture and overall lifestyle of the people of that era.

The Eastern Group of Temples can be divided into two categories, the temples dedicated to the Jain pantheon and those dedicated to Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

The Jain Temples:

Parsavanath Temple:Constructed in mid 10th century, it is dedicated to Parsavanath, the Jain Tirthankara. Well-decorated, images of elephants, lions and sea nymphs are depicted. Despite being the largest Jain Temple, images of Hindu (especially Vaishnav) deities are also there.

Adinath Temple: Dedicated to a Jain Tirthankara (religious saint) Adinath, the sculpted figures of Yakshis are particularly famous here.

Ghantai Temple: It is well known for the sculpture of a Jain goddess on a winged Garuda and for the sixteen dreams of Mahavira's mother.

The Hindu Temples:
The Brahma Temple:The granite stone temple, built at the same time of the Hanuman temple has a four-faced idol of Brahma that is very popular in this temple. One of the oldest and famous Khajuraho temples, the Brahma Temple is situated on the banks of the Khajur Sagar. Granite is the sole ingredient in the body of the magnificent structure, its peak known as Shikhara is made of sandstone.

The Vamana Temple: It is famous for the sculptures and carvings of celestial beauties in sensuous poses.

Javari Temple: It has the image of Lord Vishnu, carved in the beam in the doorway of the sanctum. The sculptures on the walls of the temple depict men and women in various postures. The skill with which the images have been created imparts life into them. The interiors are also covered with exquisite sculptures.

Hanuman Temple: This temple has a statue of Hanuman, which is about 8 feet tall dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to an early inscription on a 2.5 metre statue, the Temple was constructed round about 922 A.D. during the reign of Maharaja Harsh.
