Temples of Khajuraho

Out of 85 originally built temples in Khajuraho, only 22 temples are surviving. Looking at these temples, we can get an idea about the height of art and architecture in Khajuraho in ancient times. Each of the temples is unique in its own sense. Out of all these, two temples are made of sandstones.

First, stones were carved and then interlocking pieces were combined to make temples. There are two main group of Khajuraho temples; Eastern and Western groups.

Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho

Kandariya Mahadeo
This temple is counted among the most important temples in the group. This is the largest temple which is 31 m high. This exquisitely carved temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and has Shivalinga enshrined in it. Intricate craftsmanship can be seen in the sculptures in the temple. Eternal lovers, celestial maidens, deities, gods, goddesses and more are depicted in the sculptures.

Chaunsath Yogini
Chaunsath Yogini temple is the temple in the group which built earliest and still surviving. Built in 900 AD, this temple is dedicated to Hindu Goddess Kali. This is also the only granite temple in the group.

Chitragupta Temple
Dedicated to Sun God, this temple faces east. Five feet high image of the deity, present in the sanctum, is depicted driving a horse chariot. During Khajuraho Dance Festival, many performances take place in front of this temple.

Vishwanatha Temple
This temple enshrines the three-headed statue of Lord Brahma. Entrances of this temple are very impressive; northern steps are guarded by the magnificent stones and the southern steps have royal elephants taking care.

Lakshmana Temple
Divine trinity of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh is depicted on the lintel over the entrance of this captivating Vaishnava temple.

Matangeshwara Temple
This temple is situated outside the Western Group of Temple’s complex. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for enshrining daunting lingam which is eight-feet high.

Eastern Group of Temples in Khajuraho

Parsvanatha Temple
It is the largest Jain temple in this group with intricate carvings in stone. A throng facing the bull emblem is enshrined in the temple and is dedicated to the first tirthankar, Adinatha.

Ghantai Temple
There are beautiful frescos in the temple which depict the 16 dreams seen by mother of lord Mahavira at his birth.
Other noteworthy temples of Khajuraho are Adinatha Temple, Brahma temple, Vamana temple and Javari temple.
