Pench National Park

Situated in the Seoni and Chhindawara districts of Madhya Pradesh, Pench National Park derives its name from the ravine Pench which meanders through the park dividing it into two equal halves. Well known for abundance of flora and fauna the park has been a great source of inspiration for many including Rudyard Kipling who then wrote the ever so popular ‘The Jungle Book’. Included as the 19th Project Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh is located in the southern part of the Satpura Hills and is crisscrossed by a number of gorges making ideal conditions for accommodating a rich flora and fauna.

Topography and Species of Flora:
The forest of Pench National Park is redolent with deciduous teak plantations along with bamboo trees and numerous other herbs and shrubs. The diverse terrain of Pench is stocked with team and mixed forest the main flora here includes Saja, Bija, Lendia, Haldu, Sal, Aonla, Amaltas and more. The emerald hues of the surroundings are interrupted with the dazzling effect of white Kullu trees covering a significant part of the park. The River Pench flow stops in December, however there are a few perennial springs and tanks which are the main source of water for quenching thirst of the wilds.

Wildlife in Pench National Park:
The varied species of Cheetal, Sambar, Neelgai can be seen often on the banks of river and reservoir grazing and playing around. Amongst the more wild in nature Jackals and wild dogs can be seen any where in the jungle loitering around in the search of prey for food. While exploring the verdant vistas of the park one will surely encounter varieties of Langurs climbing the tress around. The park boasts of around 50 tigers and 30 leopards a rare number amongst wildlife national parks in Madhya Pradesh. These carnivores can be sighted around the river and other ponds especially during summer season.

Bird Population in Pench National Park:
The park apart from being a cocoon to the wild creatures is also a haven to a variety of bird population. Pench National Park boasts of 210 species of birds including the migratory ones as well. Some of the most common species of birds seen at the park includes Pea Fowl, Crow Pheasant, Crimson Breasted Barbet, Racket Tailed Drongo, Lesser Whistling Teal and more.

The park remains opened during a specific time period of the year in order to offer the visitor the best time to visit Pench National Park. The park thus is open for visitors during the months of October- June and remains closed during rainy season in the region i.e. July to September.
