
Agra Fort is the great structure of Agra which is listed under UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This building is also called as the Red Fort of Agra. Red Fort of Delhi is actually modeled around this magnificent structure. This fort is the legacy of Mughal Empire. Agra Fort was built by the Great Emperor Akbar.
Agra remained the capital of Mughal Empire for long period. In 1556, Akbar became the emperor. Though the Agra Fort was built during 1565 to 1571 AD, but it was completed by Akbar’s grandson emperor Shah Jahan. Agra Fort in Agra is the fine example of Mughal Architecture. Located on the banks of river Yamuna, Agra Fort stretches about 2.5 km. This is complex of much structure inside the red walls which are 20 meters in height. Some part of the fort is till used by the Indian Army which is not accessible to public but there are parts of the fort open for public to view how Mughals lived in that era.
Like all the Mughal Forts, Agra Fort is also surrounded by a moat. Counted one among the most interesting tourist
attractions in Agra, Agra fort looks intimidating because of its huge battlements. The colossal gateway of the fort is surrounded by magnificent towers, ramparts and bastions. Inside the fort, there are numerous palaces made of red sandstone and white marble. The interesting fact is all these palaces were not there in initial constructions. They were later on built by later generations of Jahangir and Shah Jahan.
Some important structures inside fort are as follows
The Jahangiri Mahal: The only building surviving from the original buildings built by Akbar. It is a two storied structure with great Hindu influence.
Khass Mahal: Built of White marble, this structure is designed with Islamic-Persian patterns. This palace was the fine example of Mughal passion for aesthetics.
The Sheesh Mahal: This structure is designed with myriad glass pieces and central fountain. Tiny mirrors were put on the walls.
Diwan-i- Khaas: This was the hall of Private audience. There were marble pillars, embellished with semi-precious stones and floral patterns.
