Fatehpur Sikri, Agra
Salim Chisti was a Sufi saint who lived in Sikri. Akbar wanted an heir, and the saint predicted that he would have one. When Jehangir was born, Akbar built the city of Fatehpur Sikri to honour the saint. The small town converted into the royal capital.
This new capital saw many noteworthy changes in revenue, military and administration. Art and culture also flourished. It is here the Navratnas – the famous nine courtiers of Akbar came into being, Birbal being the favourite. In times of war, the court along with the women shifted to Agra Fort which had better defence.
Though the city was abandoned after a few years, for reason not quite known, it remains a wonder among
sightseeing places in Agra.
Hundreds of craftsmen were brought from different regions of the country to build the city. One notes a mix of architectural styles from Bengal, Gujarat and other parts. Hindu and Christian designs interweave with Islamic styles. However, what is common is the red sandstone that is seen everywhere in the constructions.
What makes it so popular among tourist places in Agra are the number of beautiful palaces, royal courts and mosques. Some important buildings are:
Diwan-i-Am
This is where the emperor met the public for festivals and celebrations. The emperor’s throne is on a rectangular pavilion facing a large open area.
Diwan-i-Khas
This is where the Emperor would meet his private audience. It’s the place where famous scholars of different religions gathered and voiced their learning. It’s a chamber with many vaults and a large pillar at the centre supports a platform from where Akbar addressed his audience. The pillar is well known for its elaborate carvings.
The Queens’ Palaces
The palaces of Mariam-Uz-Zamani and Jodha Bai are the major attractions. The former is decorated with gold murals and inscriptions of poetry by Faizi.
Raja Birbal’s House
Birbal - the witty minister of the legends lived here. The house is distinct with its sloping sunshades and a curiosity for all on the Agra tour.
Salim Chisti’s Tomb
It’s a beauty in white marble and exquisitely carved lattice screens.
Buland Darwaza
Imposing in its height, it’s a magnificent piece of architecture. As the Agra travel guide will inform you, it was built as a mark of Akbar’s victory over the Deccan.
