  • Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the northwestern part of Bhutan, covering an area of 1545 square kilometres. With 420 sq. km of buffer zone, Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses parts of Trashi Yangtse districts with a large area of the Alpine Tundra belt. Laying on the eastern border it adjoins a planned park in Arunachal Pradesh, India. Ranging from 1400 to 6000 metres contains rich diversity of flora and fauna as well as some of Bhutan’s most scenic alpine lakes.

  • The sanctuary is home to around 100 species of mammals, including rare and globally endangered species. Bomdeling valley, within the sanctuary is a paradise for bird lovers as it is one of is the roosting places of the endangered black necked crane.   • Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary in Bhutan was established in 1995 to protect and preserve Eastern Himalayan ecosystems. With great variation in altitude, these range from warm broadleaved forests to alpine and sub alpine habitats. To the south, are the broadleaved with many ridges, valleys and river gorges. The central Bomdeling wildlife sanctuary region has ridges and valleys that are covered with scrubland, conifer forests and broadleaved forests. The northern part is full of glacial lakes, valleys, scrubland, alpine pastures, glaciers, snow peaks and rockyslopes.

  • Bomdeling protects the habitat of blue sheep, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, wild boar, wild dog, leopard and fox. The Royal Bengal tiger and red panda are the endangered lot in wildlife sanctuaries in Bhutan. Bomdeling is a showcase of 293 species of birds, being one of the two of Bhutan’s wintering spots for the endangered black necked crane. These fly down from the Tibetan plateau to escape extreme weather conditions.

  • Sanctuary is also a paradise for butterflies with 32 species of butterflies of which some are rare.

  • 190 resident households who are predominantly farmers reside in the vicinity of this wildlife reserve in Bhutan with flat lands cleared for villages and agriculture. Also, within the sanctuary are several cultural and religious sites ofinternational significance like the Rigsum Gompa, the mystical Singye Dzong and Dechenphodrang Lhaghang–the most scenic of monasteries in the whole of Bhutan.
