  • Jigme Dorji National Park is the largest of wildlife sanctuaries in Bhutan in 4,349 square kilometres. In northwestern Bhutan, the highly protected Jigme Dorji National Park is one of the most biologically rich areas in the Eastern Himalayan region, stretching from temperate forests to permanent ice fields in the north-western border. This varied climate accounts for the rich ecosystem that supports 1400 varieties of plants with a variety of birds and animals, including rare or endangered species. Glaciers and glacial lakes are spread across in the mountains forming important sources for some of Bhutan’s main rivers. Most of Bhutan’s popular trekking routes can be found inside the Jigme Dorji, one of the famous wildlife sanctuaries in Bhutan.

  • Flora:
    Jigme Dorji has broad leaved forests of Oak, Rhododendron, Maple and Walnut tree with Conifer forests having Spruce, Fir, Hemlock and Himalayan Yew. Strikingly red, Rhododendrons offers a colourful and picturesque sight at springtime. The alpine region houses numerous flowers such as the national flower blue poppy, edelweiss and 50 species of orchids. Himalayan herbs found here are used in traditional Bhutanese medicines.

  • Fauna:
    This protected area of Bhutan wildlife sanctuaries houses endangered species like Black Bears, Markot, Sambar, Takin, Barking/ Musk Deer, Yak, Clouded Leopard, Blue Sheep, Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Serow, Pika and Wild Dog along with the unique mountain goat, Goral. Jigme Dorji is the only place in the world where the Snow Leopards and Royal Bengal Tiger exist together.
    Several bird species offer bird lovers a feast with sights of migratory birds with the rare Black necked Crane, White capped Water Redstarts, Blue Whistling/ White Throated Thrushes, Yellow billed Blue Magpies, Himalayan Monal and Spotted Nutcrackers.

  • People:
    Covering districts of Gasa and western areas of Thimphu and Paro, Jigme Dorji is home to semi nomadic tribes. Most of them are yak herders with some harvesting medicinal and aromatic plants. They subsist on marginal agriculture and cottage industries making forest products.

  • Other Attractions:
  • * Sacred Peaks, the Jomolhari, Tsherimgang and Jichu Drakey are prominent landmarks within the park.
    * Hot springs, known as Gasa Tsachhu are famous for therapeutic effects.
    * The 2600 metres high, Cheri Monastery on a steep mountain slope is distinct, being the seat of first monastic body in Bhutan.
