Khaling Neoli Wildlife Sanctuary, Bhutanbhutan Tour Enquire

  • Smallest of Bhutan’s protected areas of 273 square kilometres, the Khaling Neoli Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the far south eastern part of Bhutan. With an altitude range of 400-2,200 meters, the Khaling Neoli Sanctuary in Bhutan covers only one district of Samdrup Jongkhar and is an extended modification of the former Neoli wildlife sanctuary. To the east and south, the reserve adjoins another in Assam on the Indian side of the border; both together form a trans- frontier reserve.

The river Nyera Ama Chu flows in the west with the Martshala and Shingkhar Lauri geogs to the north. The sub tropical forests in this famous sanctuary are mainly divided into two forest reserves namely Khaling and Neoli that are being planned to merge the two without affecting any change of the sanctuary size

The Conifer forests are abundant at the sub-alpine regions of the country with spruce, larch and the hemlock found on wetter slopes. The undergrowth consists of rhododendrons, bamboo and other shrubs. Broadleaved evergreen forests are found in dry areas with grasslands at the wet regions. While the blue pine forests occur in the temperate regions the chir pine are found at lower altitudes.

  • The Khaling Wildlife Sanctuary serves as an important habitat for the wild Asiatic elephant and the tiger. The sanctuary is the best habitat for the rare pygmy hog and the hispid hare can be sighted here with the Gaur and other tropical wildlife. Khaling has been rated by Birdlife International as one of the prominent bird areas that need to be preserved in Bhutan. The rare avian fauna like the Chestnut breasted partridge and Rufous necked hornbill.
