  • Lying in the east central part of Bhutan, Thrumshingla National Park is spread over 889 square kilometers. Thrumshingla, newest of Bhutan wildlife sanctuaries was established in 1998. Lying between Bumthang and Mongar and protects the richest temperate forests of Fir and Chir Pine as old as 400 years. Also known as the Rhododendron Garden, Thrumshingla has the presence of endangered animals and the most threatened bird species.

    This reserve is ideal for bird watchers and ornithologists. Thrimshingla is known for its spectacular scenic views, dense forests and alpine meadows. Thrumshingla is a major point of attraction for tourists and trekkers, primarily because of its picture perfect scenery. It is also one of the few natural habitats of the world.

  • Flora: Thrumshingla presents diverse habitat with fluctuating climatic conditions in altitudes ranging from less than 1000 metres to above 4000 metres. With temperatures ranging between - 21ْ C and 28ْ C. Unique of wildlife sanctuaries in Bhutan, this protected area has vast biodiversity that includes alpine forests, subtropical broadleaf trees with some rare plants. Rhododendrons grow in their natural habitat and now forms a major protected area in Bhutan. They brighten up the national park in various colours during the monsoons.

  • Fauna: Over 68 species of mammals exist in this wildlife sanctuary. These include rare Clouded/ Snow Leopards, Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda, Musk Deer, Capped Langur, Wild Boar/ Dog, Barking Deer and Malayan Giant Squirrel. Presence of Bengal Tigers have proven the existence of tigers at the highest altitude ever, at 4000 metres
  • With a lot of bird species in Thrumshingla, the park attracts birdwatchers and ornithologists. About 341 species of birds include the newly spotted Wedge billed Babbler with endangered Rufous-Necked Hornbill, beautiful Nuthatch, Ward’s Trogon, White naped Yuhina, Brown Wood Owl, Black Necked Crane and the Chestnut Breasted Partridge. An important Bird Area in the Sino Indian Himalayan mountain forests, Thrumshingla has been recognised as the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in Bhutan.

  • Home to only 1000 residents, communities within the park’s confinement earn their livelihood from tourism. Overgrazing and human interference have become a serious threat at present. However, the Parks’ maintenance is done with an effective management plan and a dedicated Park staff to keep the pristine ecosystem intact for future generations to come.
