  • The Kingdom of Bhutan has rich and diverse natural heritage that has earned it an acclaimed status of one of the ten global biodiversity hotspots. Bhutan was called “Valley of Medicinal Herbs” with 72% of the country still under forest coverage. 22% of land is reserved for protected national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Bhutan. These are home to rare animals and many birds with unique plant species. Bhutan’s traditional respect for nature has encouraged people to coexist in harmony with nature and maintain a balanced ecosystem for future generations to follow suit. Famous wildlife sanctuaries in Bhutan have been established to protect ecology.

  • Flora:
  • Wildlife reserves in Bhutan have over 5400 plant species with 300 medicinal herbs.

  • At 800 metres:Tropical Evergreen Forests

    900 -1,800 metres: Subtropical grasslands with Rhododendron, Oak, Walnut, Sal and Orchid.

    1800-2400 metres:Diverse temperate zone with dark forests of Oak, Birch, Maple, Magnolia and Laurel.

    Above 2,400:Spruce, Yew and Weeping Cypress and up till the tree line is the Himalayan Fir. Bhutan’s national flower, Blue Poppy grows above the tree line up to 4,500m

    5550 metres: Low Shrubs, Rhododendrons, Himalayan grasses and flowering herbs.


  • Fauna:

    Bhutan’s distinct locale and unexploited surroundings characterise habitat as found in Himalayas.

    Tropical/Subtropical Belt: Asiatic Elephants, One-horned Rhinoceros, Gaur, Wild Water Buffalo, Hog Deer, Tiger, Clouded Leopard, Hornbill and Trogon.

    Higher Himalayas: Blue Sheep, Takin, Musk Deer, Snow Leopard, Wolf and other species of Pale Arctic area.
    With over 770 bird species recorded, jungles in Bhutan are famous for 350 wintering birds of Black Necked Crane.


  • Major National Parks:

    Jigme Dorji: Largest of Bhutan wildlife sanctuaries, it houses endangered species of Takin, Blue Sheep, Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, Himalayan Black Bear and Red Panda. More than 300 medicinal plants are here.

  • Royal Manas: Adjoining National Parks, Black Mountain in Bhutan to the Manas in India it is a World heritage Site. It houses 372 bird species and the rare Golden Langur, Pygmy Hog and Hispid Hare.

    Thrumshingla: With varying altitudes, it offers scenic views with dense Fir and Chir Pine forests. Also are, threatened birds like Rufous Necked Hornbill, Satyra Tragopan, Ward’s Trogon, Chestnut Breasted Partridge.
