Though Bhutan is a small nation but it has many beautiful cities. Placed beautifully in the lap of Himalayas, cities of Bhutan have all the charm which is expected from any mountainous location. Bumthang is one of the 20 districts of Bhutan. Districts in Bhutan are known as the dzongkhag. Bumthang is among the most historic districts as there are largest number of sacred sites and ancient temples. Often whole district is referred as the Bumthang valley. It consists of four mountain valleys of Ura, Tang, Chumey and Choekhor.
According to the Bumthang travel guide, Bumthang means a "beautiful Field". "Bum" is either derived from the word "Bumpa" which means a vessel of holy water and it describes the shape and nature of the valley or from "bum" which means girl and referring this place as a valley of beautiful girls. "Thang" means a flat place or fields. There are many farms in Bumthang which yield things like buckwheat, honey, dairy products and the apples mainly. People speak language called Bumthangkha in this district. This Dzon tibeto-Burman language is related closely to Bhutanese national language called Dzongkha. Each valley in Bumthang has its own dialect.
Bumthang in Bhutan is located in the north-central region of the nation and is often called as the spiritual centre of the country. During 8th century Guru Rinpoche cured the spirit-induced ailment of a local king. This resulted in king converting to Buddhism. Another well known Buddhist saint Pema Ligpa was born here. Many other Buddhist saints lived and practiced here. In this region, there is large collection of monasteries and sacred artifacts.
During your Bumthang travel, you will have an opportunity to visit its cities like Chhumey, Tang, Ura, Jakar. Chhumey is known for its woven woolen goods. Jakar is the first place where any Buddhist monk came for the first time in Bhutan. Tang has many sacred sites and Ura is a very serene mountainous village.
