  • Located at an altitude of 2,800 m, Jakar is a beautiful town in Bhutan. Located in north of Bhutan, it is the principal administrative town of Bumthang district. Jakar is located in Choekor Valley and this valley is amongst the most beautiful places in Bhutan. Fondly referred as the “Little Switzerland”, this large valley is surrounded by the tree covered mountains and hills.

  • Jakar in Bhutan is the main centre of Vajrayana Buddhism of the Nyingma tradition. Jakar is home to many monasteries and sacred places. Jakar is the collection of many small villages below the dzong which is collectively known as Jakar Town.

  • Jakar Dzong built in 1667, is known as the “Fortress of the White Birds”. There is a legend which goes like this. When a group of lamas were making a search for the good site for the construction of new dzong in the area, one white birdkept circling them until it settled on the top of a hill. Taking it a good omen, they selected the hill as a site for the dzong and it was named as the white bird.

  • Gurur Rinpoche first arrived at Jakar when he first came to Bhutan. Jakar is regarded as the birthplace of Buddhism in Bhutan because the ruler of Jakar converted to Buddhism under the guidance of Guru Rinpoche. Jakar is also the birthplace of Pema Lingpa who was a great and revered teacher of Vajrayana school of Buddhism. Due to these reasons, Jakar is regarded as a verysacred place.

  • Jakar has the Jambey Lhakhang which is counted among the 108 monasteries built miraculously in one night by King Songten Gampo.

  • The best season to make Jakar travel is from late May to the end of the September. According to the Jakar travel guide, it is a must visit place for the people searching for the peaceful and pristine natural surroundings.
