Birla Planetarium, Chennai

Birla Planetariumchennai Tour Enquire

The night sky, these are the three words that conjure up visions of magic and mystery, of infinite space and the eternal dance of celestial bodies across the galaxies. And what better place to appreciate this in a wholly new way than the Birla Planetarium in Chennai. Situated in the Tamil Nadu or Periyar Science and Technology Centre, right at the heart of the city, the Birla Planetarium is sure to set your heart racing – whether you are an amateur astronomer or just an interested layman.

State-of-the-art technology brings alive planets and asteroids, stars and galaxies at the touch of a button. The lights are switched off and you are transported far far away to regions unexplored, where man can travel only in his imagination and dreams.

The Chennai Birla Planetarium incorporates in its show special topics to capture and retain your interest – The Cycle of Stars, Man on the Moon, Sky and Seasons and The Solar System. And what’s more you can either choose a Tamil or an English commentary. The timings are 10.45 am and 1.15 pm for those who prefer English; 12 noon and 2.30 pm for those who prefer Tamil.

The Birla Planetarium was set up in 1988. And since then it has been able to capture thousands of hearts, 236 people at a time. For those who have a special interest in the night sky, there is an extraordinary treat – a show on night watching every second Saturday between 7 pm to 9 pm.

Just walk in and take a seat in the air conditioned auditorium at the Birla Planetarium. You will be surprised at the mixed nature of the company you will have – from students to astronomers, tourists to environmentalists or just ordinary people who have their sense of wonder intact and a few hours to spare.

The fully computerised projector system of the Birla Planetarium will weave its magic on the dome screen, and you will feel like a child once again, staring at the night sky with wide eyed wonder. Slowly you will become aware of the voice in the background explaining the amazing spectacle that is unfolding in front of your eyes.

Once the show is over, and the lights come back, you will be suddenly transported back to this world. But be sure that you’d have left a part of you behind.
