Very much revered by Hindus, Kalpeeswarar Temple is an ancient and magnificent temple in Chennai. Chennai is a city which boasts of the best harmony of old traditions and modern values. Despite being modern in thinking, people of Chennai are very much religious at heart. They are very much devoted to their religion.

Chennai is marked by the presence of many famous temples. These temples are visited by the millions of devotees, not only from Chennai but from all over India. Kalpeeswarar Temple is counted among the most famous temples in Chennai.

The ancient temple, Kalpeeswarar Temple in Chennai was built in the reign of Pallavas during 8th century. This temple has stood the testimony of times and is regarded as the best example of Dravidian temple architecture. There are some fragmentary inscriptions, found on the temple, which date back to 1250 AD. Later it was renovated during 16th century by the Vijaynagar Empire and present structure is that reconstructed temple.

The temple is 37 meter tall and has intricately carved, grand “Gopuram”. Gopuram is the tower present in the temple. This Gopuram has all the elements of Dravidian architecture. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple houses many intricately cared sculptures. In the outer courtyard of the temple are present 63 idols of Saivaite Saints, also called Nayanmars. This is a spectacular sight to see these idols. In the courtyard of the temple, under an old Punnai Tree, is located a shrine which is devoted to Goddess Parvathi. It’s believed that here, she used to worship Lord Shiva in the form of a peacock. Mylopre, the name of town is derived from this shrine only-'myil' meaning peacock and 'oor' meaning town. In this temple, Parvati is worshipped as Karpagambal.

The Kalpeeswarar Temple in Tamil Nadu is known to be the site of miracle. According to the legend, when saint Gnanasambandar sang, a dead girl was resurrected. Sight of this miracle is shown by sculpture standing before the flagmast of the temple.

During months of March-April, the temple wears a festive look due to the event of Arupathumoovar temple festival. It is a 10-day long annual event in which processions are held. Bronze statues of those 63 saints are carried in the procession. These saints spent exemplary life in midst penance and prayers. This procession is held on eighth day of the festival.
