
Marina Beach in Chennai is very popular tourist attraction. Situated on the Coromandel coasts on the Bay of Bengal in, Marina Beach is 12 km long. Bay of Bengal is the part of Indian Ocean. Soft, golden sands adorn the vast stretch of the beach. Marina Beach is second longest city beach in the world, after Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Also, this beach is quite wide and at places its width stretches up to 437 meters.
At the start of the beach is placed, Fort St. George in the north and the beach ends near the Besant Nagar in the south. The Triumph of Labor by Debiprasad Roy Choudhry is the most impressive statue here among all others. These statues are standing on the promenade, created between beach and the road. This promenade was built by Governor Grant-Duff who also christened Marina Beach with this name.
While at Marina beach, one can easily notice the joy; joggers and fishing boats at dawn, enjoying families and playing children, swirling beam from lighthouse, lantern-lit shops, and fast food joints at night, sounds of the sea waves. This is the normal scene at the beach which is a great attraction in itself. Counted among the famous beaches in Chennai, Marina Beach boasts of pristine beauty, rich ecosystem and serene ambience. But, due to large interference of human activity, this ambience and the ecosystem of the beach are greatly influenced. Many voluntary organizations are coming forward to take up the task of cleaning the beach and protecting its ecosystem. Swimming and bathing at Marina Beach is not allowed due to safety reasons.
Many important structures and monuments are present at the Marina Beach. These structures include Victoria War Memorial, Anna Memorial, MGR Memorial, Vivekananda House, Presidency College, University of Madras, All India Radio, Chennai, Light House, and Fort St. George.
