Qutub Minar, Delhi

This place is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Qutub Minar was a victory tower whose foundation was laid by Qutubuddin Aibak in 1199AD.


Structure of Qutub Minar

Qutub Minar is round in shape and diameter of its base is 14.3 m and of top is 2.75 m. Though started by Qutubudin Aibak, its construction was completed by his son-in-law, Iltutmish who was his successor.  Construction of Qutub Minar got completed in 1235 AD.  Interiors of Qutub Minar were decorated with calligraphy.  Intricate carvings and Verses of Quoran are engraved on this tower, made of Red Sandstone. Originally, it was a six storey tower as its top storey got ruined with time. Qutub Minar has balconies encompassing each floor to have panoramic view of the city.

You can find more interesting information in this Delhi Travel Guide. Qutb-ud-din Aibak got inspiration to build this tower from the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan. Aibak wanted to make a minaret taller than that on in Afghanistan. When he started its construction, he could complete only the base of the tower. Later Iltutmish, his successor, added three more floors. 5th and the last floor were added by Firuz Shah Tughlaq in 1368.  Qutub Minar is built on the ruins of Lal Kot in the Dhillika which was the capital of last Hindu rulers of Delhi, Tomars and Chauhans.

Other important monuments in Qutub Complex are the Iron Pillar, Quwwatu'l-Islam , Masjid Tomb of Iltutmish, tomb of Adham Khan and Zafar Mahal.
