Mahatama Gandhi got assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30th January, 1948 and was cremated here at this place.
Life of Mahtama Gandhi
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the real name of Mahatama Gandhi who was the political and spiritual leader of India. He fought for independence of India through civil disobedience and total non-violence. He practiced truth and non-violence all his life and asked others to do the same. His birthday on 2nd October is celebrated as the national holiday, Gandhi Jayanti.

Description of Raj Ghat
While you enter Raj Ghat on your Delhi Travel, you will sense an air of peace and tranquility at this very simple but charming place. A memorial stone is placed here in the middle of lush green ground with fountains and exotic trees. There is square platform, consisted of black platform. Mahatama Gandhi uttered the word “Hey Ram” while he took his last breath after his assassination and these words are engraved near the black platform. At Raj Ghat, a flame in a copper urn keeps burning 24 hours a day.

Every Friday, a commemorative ceremony is held here. On the occasions like Birthday (2nd October) and his death anniversary, special prayers are held. 30th January is remembered as Martyr’s day. Whenever any foreign dignitary comes to visit India, visiting Raj Ghat to pay homage to the Father of Nation is a first item in the agenda.
