Description of Rashtrapati Bhawan:
Rashtrapati Bahwan was designed by Lutyens who was the architect behind Raisina Hill area. Two Secretariats are situated on the either sides of the palace and three together open up into a huge square known as the Viceroy’s Court. Here stands the Jaipur Column and steps at the entrance are flanked by the sandstone elephants and the imperial lions.
There is wide flight of steps on the main entrance which leads to 12-column portico. Lutyens had skillfully blended the soft touches of Oriental architecture into his style despite his dislike. The most stunning and intriguing feature of the palace is its huge neo-Buddhist copper dome which can be noticed from kilometer away. This dome is placed above the spectacular Durbar Hall which is circular in shape. Interiors of the Hall are stunning with colored marbles obtained from various parts of India. Initially, Viceroy’s throne was kept in this chamber. In independent India, this hall is used for all important official occasion of government of India such as swearing ceremony of Prime Minister, Member of Parliament and the Cabinet, Arjuna Award ceremony.
The palace has 54 bedrooms in the private apartments above which can be reached by a marble staircase, adjacent to the Durbar Hall. There are state apartments on the principal floor; State Drawing Room, State Ballroom, State Dining Room and the State Library.
Moghul Garden to the west of palace is so beautiful and so perfect that people called it as the God’s Own Heaven. It is open to Public during spring season amidst high security.
