In 1000 B.C during Mahabharatha, Indraprastha was formed by the Pandavas, which is understood to have been around the annex of Purana Quila.
Mauryan Capital:
Delhi was on the great national highway that linked the capital of Mauryas, Patliputra (presently Patna in India) with Takshashila (presently Taxila in Pakistan). Buddhist Monks followed the route while traveling to Taxila, highlighting Delhi’s strategic historical importance.

Delhi Sultanate:
Qutub-Ud-Din Aibak conquered Delhi in 1193, which was followed by the Khilji rulers who made Delhi, their capital. The second city of Delhi was built at Siri.
Tughlaqabad became the third Delhi city built during Ghiyas-Ud-Din’s reign from 1321-25.
Muhammed Bin Tughlak built the fourth city of Jahanpanah, which was going to be shifted to Daulatabad in the Deccan. But Tughlaq decided to focus on Delhi itself.
Feroz Shah Tughlak built the fifth city of Ferozabad in 1351 on the banks of Yamuna River. Then the sixth city was dominated by the Lodhi’s, the remains of which can be seen within the Lodhi gardens.
The mighty Mughal dynasty with Babar leading the front, dominated Indian subcontinent from 1526 - 1857.Shahjahanabad was the seventh city formed during Shah Jahan’s rule. In 1857, Bahadur Shah Zafar fell to the British during the first war of independence.
British Rule:
The British had firm control over the subcontinent. Britishers, who developed India considerably, shifted their capital from Calcutta to Delhi, with all activities of freedom struggle headed there. With the slogan ‘Dilli chalo’, the Azad Hind Fauj marched to Delhi to established Swaraj. The end of British rule in India gave birth to the city of Lutyen’s Delhi or New Delhi. |
