
Located at a distance of 2 km from iconic Golconda Fort, Qutub Shahi Tomb is among the most famous historical monuments in Hyderabad. The place is no less amusing than Golconda fort. Tombs of seven Qutub Shahi rulers share the same place. There are many small and large tombs. Each tomb is a fine piece of architecture which is the blend of Indian and Persian styles of architectures.
Qutub Shahi Tombs in Hyderabad is built from gray granite and is intricately carved. Built on the elevated square basis, tombs have domed structures and are encircled by the pointed arches. Smaller tombs are made in single story while there are two storeys in the larger tombs. A coffin in the centre of each tomb covers the burial vault lying in a crypt below.
Originally, Hyderabad Qutub Shahi Tombs were exquisitely ornamented when they were built. Quadrangular in shape, each tomb rises to a height of 9-15 meters on the terrace. Out of original green and blue tile which covered the domes, only few are left. It is said that tombs were furnished with velvet canopies, chandeliers, carpets and other decorations. Visitors used to recite verses from the Quorans, kept on the supports. To distinguish the tombs of Sultans to other members of the noble family, golden spires were attached on Sultan’s tombs.
The largest tomb among these Qutub Shahi tombs reaches up to 42 meters of height. It is one of the magnificent monuments in Hyderabad. It is designed over a double story terrace and is raised to a height of 6 m from the floor of the terrace. These monuments, built during reign of Qutub Shahi, are the testimony to the rich historical past. These mausoleums held high respect during Qutub Shahi period. But after them, these monuments were ignored. Then in early 19th century Sir Salar Jung III made efforts to bring them back to glory.
According to Hyderabad Travel Guide, these monuments are the splendid work of architecture and art of that period. These tombs are surrounded by a garden. This place is the venue of Deccan festivals held by State government annually. With these tombs in the backdrop, this festival is unique feature of Hyderabad culture.
