Idukki

IdukkiIndia Tour Enquire

  • Idukki, one of the popular hill stations in Kerala, is drained by rivers Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar. The rivers cut across the hills of Idukki, thus giving the place its name that means a ‘narrow gorge’. The countryside is a maze of undulating green hills cut across by meandering streams and springs.

  • The town of Idukki can be a base for exploring the district of the same name that houses some of Kerala’s most popular tourist sites. Our Kerala travel guide gives you a brief insight into the nearby attractions.

  • Idukki Reservoir : The Idukki, Kulamavu and Cheruthony dams combine to form the huge Idukki Reservoir. Interestingly, the Idukki Dam is Asia’s first and the world’s second arch dam.

  • Idukki Wldlife Sanctuary : The sanctuary can be visited via the Thodupuzha town, 40 km away. A visit to the sanctuary can be combined with the visit to the Idukki Dam.

  • Keezar Kuthu Waterfalls :
Splashing down a height of 1500 m, the cascade is lovingly called the Rainbow waterfalls. The surrounding hilly slopes are ideal for trekking.

  • Hill View Park :
The scenic hill side has been converted into a nicely landscaped park. You can go boating in the hill-top lake.

  • Nadukani :
The two-storied watch tower offers a magnificent view of the green hills and valleys. The place is very popular as a picnic zone.
  • If not the town, the district must be on any visitor’s itinerary. Without visiting at least some of the district’s better known attractions are sanctuaries, spice gardens, hills your South India travel can never be complete.

  • Access :
  • Air : Kochi is the nearest international airport.
Road : Accessible from most towns in Kerala.
Rail : Kottayam, Ernakulam and Theni (in Tamil Nadu) are the nearest railheads with onward connection with the rest of the country.
