Perched on a hillock amid the Western Ghat hills of Kerala, Thekkady is one of the most popular spots of the state. An important spice and rubber growing zone, across the world, it is better known as the gateway to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Sprawling farms growing cardamom, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, rubber, coffee and tea envelops Thekkady in a serene green embrace. The luxury resorts tucked among the scenic countryside or the spice gardens offer a charming break. Kumily, four km downhill, is a spice trading zone. But do be careful when buying small amounts – the cheaper varieties on sale may not live up to expectations.
Those on a tight budget can stay in Kumily and visit the Sanctuary on a day visit. Others can choose from a range of luxury hotels and resorts located in and around Thekkady. Or, enjoy a home stay with a local family and learn about the cultivation and cuisine.
