European Colonizers and Kerala’s Accession by the British
The history of Kerala took another turn when the Portuguese Navigator Vas Co Da Gama discovering the sea routes to India landed in Calicut (now Kozhikode) in 1498. The Portuguese gradually developed trade relations with rulers of Quilon and Cannanore. Then came the Dutch, French and British colonizers and engaged themselves in various wars to take over the responsibility of this rich land of India. The British by 1634-35 gained permission to use all the Portuguese ports in Kerala from the Zamorin, (the lord of sea). Gradually various parts of Kerala came under the rule of British. Though Buddhism was practiced in ancient Kerala it gradually disappeared due to the existence of Hindu religion.
