Performing Arts of Kerala

Kerala’s performing arts are feast to the eyes of tourists. Classical and ritual arts of Kerala have always enjoyed rich patronage, from successive kings up to present democratic governments. Classical Dances

Koodiyattom : Oldest dance form of Kerala, it represents Kerala’s Sanskrit theatre that originated two millennia ago.

 

Kathakali : It is performed by men/women in elaborate costumes and headgear using their entire body and they narrate Indian mythologies.

 

Chakyarkoothu : This solo dance is based on themes usually from the epics. It is presented in temple theatres accompanied with instruments.

 

Folk Dances

Mohiniattam : A gracefully elegant dance, it is a gliding movement of body. Dancer is dressed in white and gold with the hair put up at the side of the head and adorned with jasmine in traditional style.

 

Theyyam : Known for fearsome masks and the performer’s trance like state, it represents the corrupt form of God. Performed in temples to propitiate deities, Theyyam is a medium between the deity and devotee.

 

Thullal : Characterized by simple presentations, wit and humor, this solo dance with no stage arrangement is distinct by fast and rhythmic movements. In this performing art of Kerala the dancer himself takes the lead and sings.

 

Kolkali : It is the farmer’s group dance. Twelve to twenty four dancers move rhythmically around the ceremonial lamp, tapping two feet long wooden sticks held in their hands.

 

Pulikali : Common in Kerala culture during festivals, performers painted like tigers in bright yellow, red and black, dance to loud beats of percussion instruments.

 

Martial Arts

Velakali : A ritual art, fifty or more performers in the traditional attire of soldiers, bearing colorful shields and swords, dance with war like steps in perfect orchestration to the instruments.

 

Kalaripayattu : Oldest and most scientific in the world, the State has produced many a hero whose exploits findexpression in folk songs and legends.

 

Music

Panchavadyam : Using five instruments, Carnatic classical music is played. Starting with the blowing of conch, positioning of artists in a concert is vital. In the famous Thrissur Pooram festival, one can witness a full complement of Panchavadyam.
