  • Located in Idukki district of Kerala at Devikulam Taluk Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a renowend wildlife sanctuary in God’s Own Country, Kerala. It is supervised by the wildife division of Eravikulam National Park. It is under consideration by the UNESCO to declare it as a World Heritage Site. The altitude of the park is 400 meters at the area of the Chinnar River to 2522 meters at the area of Kumarikal Malai Peak.

    The major peaks located in the Chinnar sanctuary are Nandala Malai (2,372 meters) Kottakombu malai (2,144 meters) Vellaikal malai (1,863 meters) and Viriyoottu malai (1,845 meters).

  • Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala has two rivers Chinnar and Pambar that supply water to the wildlife of the park. Due to its location in the rainshadow area of western ghats Chinnar gets rain only in the month of October and November. The main attractions of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary are :

  • Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary is a home to 34 species of mammals including many Panthers and Spotted deer, 50 -60 Indian Elephants, Gaur, Tigers, Sambar Deer, Common langur, Bonnet Macaque, Hanuman monkey, threatened Nilgiri Tahr, endangered Rusty-spotted Cats and Grizzled Giant Squirrels (240). Chinnar is also a home to 245 species of birds including Yellow-throated Bulbuls and 52 species of reptiles including 29 species of snakes, Indian Star Tortoise and endangered Mugger Crocodiles. Chinnar and Pambar rivers are home to 42 species of fishes including Garra mullya minnows, River-carp baril,Giant Danio and the endangered hill stream game fish Deccan Mahseer. Also 22 species of amphibian and 156 species of butterflies are found in Chinnar.

  • Flora in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary :
  • Chinnar is rich in various floras including 965 species of flowering plants, wet grasslands, moist deciduous forest, thorny scrub forests, etc. The vareities of Xerophyticspecies are Acacia arabica, Acacia leucofolia, Acacia concinna, Prosporis juliflora, and Opuntia stricta. Marayoor sandalwood forest is also available in Chinnar sanctuary.
  • What is the most scenic attraction of Chinnar is that the stony rocks add stunning beauty to the sanctuary. December to April is the best season to visit this sanctuary. One can explore this wildlife sanctuary staying at a hotel or resort at Marayoor and Munnar. Things to do in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary are boat riding, jeep safari to view the wild habitats, angling at Chinnar and Pambar River, boat riding, bird watching, etc.
