  • Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a paradise of ornithologist is located on the bank of lush greeneries of Vembanad Lake in Kottayam district of God’s Own Country. Known as also Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, this sanctuary is developed by a British in an area of rubber plantation hence it is also known as Baker’s Estate bearing its history to the Baker’s family.

    The sanctuary is sprawling over 14 acres of land stretch to the southern banks of the River Kavanar. The other areas located near the sanctuary also ideal for bird watching are Kaipuzha Muttu, Pathirmanal, Narakathara, Thollairam Kayal, and Poothanpandi Kayal.

The migratory Siberian crane is the main attraction of this park who visit this park from the month of November to February. In the migratory seasons, parrot, teal, lark, flycatcher are seen here. Some migratory birds fly from Himalayas and some from Siberia.

  • Pathiramanal Island is located at a close proximity to the park covering 10 acres of land. Legend says this island rose up when a Brahmin dived into the Vembanad Lake for his evening ablution. It can be reached by boat ride only. Various migratory birds flock this island.
