  • Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala is located in Muthanga rain forest adjacent to the Nagarhole and Bandipur Protected Area of Karnataka on the northeast side and Mudumalai of the south east of Tamil Nadu. This park is included in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve aiming to preserve the rich bio-diversity of the area.

    The location of the park has a historical importance as Pazhassi Raja lost his life fighting bravely against the British. It is situated on Mysore way stretch from Sultan Bathery. Wayanad Sanctuary spreads into kannur in the northern side and Kozhikode on the southern side. The sanctuary is supervised by the Wayanad Wildlife Division.

  • The forests of the Wayanad Park are south Indian deciduous, semi-evergreen forest, and 110 square kilometers of the park is covering teak, eucalyptus and grevelia plantations. The deciduous types of forests are maruthu, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, vengal, chadachi, mazhukanjiram, bamboo, etc. The other types of forests are Veteria indica. Lagerstroemia, Lanceolata, Termianalia paniculata, etc.

  • Fauna in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary :
  • The various faunas of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary are elephant, tiger, Panther, jungle cat, civet cat, monkeys, wild dog, bison, deer, bear, etc. Reptiles are monitor lizard and a variety of snakes. Birds’ population of the park includes Peacock, babblers, cuckoos, owl, wood pecker and jungle fowl. Tigers can be spotted from Tholpetty, Rambur and Mavinhalla.
