Wildlife Sanctuaries in Kerala

Kerala one of the most tourist haunts southern state of Indian Union is an abode to 12 wildlife sanctuaries and 2 national parks. The wildlife sanctuaries of Kerala are a reservoir of the various floras and faunas. The Indian Government implemented here the Project elephant to ensure long time survival of the wild elephants. Fauna in Kerala Wildlife Sanctuaries :
There are various wild animals found in the sanctuaries of Kerala. The main animals are Elephants, gaur (the Indian bison), sambar, deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, civet cats, tigers, panthers, leopards, wild boars, sloth bears, lion tailed macaques, Malabar giant squirrel, flying squirrel, spotted deer, peacocks, star tortoises, wild dogs, the Atlas moth, mongoose, foxen, bears, barking deer, pangolins, bison, etc.

The various species of reptiles are cobra, viper, krait, a number of non- poisonous snakes, pythons, rat snakes, vine snakes, bicoloured frogs, crocodiles, varanur pond terrapins, cane turtles, star tortoises, geckoes, chameleons, monitor lizards, etc. The sanctuaries are home to various resident and migratory birds and so Kerala is known as a birdwatcher’s paradise.
The birds are water fowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, water duck, migratory Siberian duck, jungle fowls, mynas, laughing thrushes, black bulbuls, etc.

A total of 10,000 species of plant are found in wildlife sanctuaries of God’s Own Country, Kerala. The plants’ categories are flowering plants, medicinal plants, evergreen and semi-evergreen forest, dry deciduous forest, grass species, orchids, etc. The names of the plants are teak, maruthu, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, vengal, chadachi, mazhukanjiram, bamboo, neem, nanjanathi, sandal, dendrocalamus, marythu, vaka, mulluvenka elavu, manjakadambu pala, vembu, aval, etc.
