Gateway of India, Mumbai

Most important landmark of Mumbai, Gateway of India is a triumphal arch.  This huge archway is located at the water edge at Apollo Bunder in South Mumbai. This structure is the testimony to the bygone colonial British era.  Whoever visits Mumbai from this side of the sea is welcomed by this majestic structure.  This is the popular harbor of the city and is used for travelling to other parts of the city, such as the Elephanta Islands.  You can go for a short cruise to the natural harbor of the Bombay.

 

Description of Structure
Counted among the famous sightseeing places in Mumbai, Gateway of India is about 26 m high.  A central dome with 15 m diameter covers the top of the monument. Also there are four turrets and fine lattice work seen in the structure. Yellow basalt and reinforced concrete is used in making of this entire structure. This magnificent structure is the good example of Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. Some unique features of Muslim architectural designs are also blended skillfully in the designing of this building.  This kind of designs was popular in Gujarat in the 16th century. This monument was designed by British architect George Wittet. 

 

History of Gateway of India
Now one of the famous Mumbai tourist attractions, Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India.  Built in early 20th century, this monument took four years to get completed. In the March of year 1911, then governor of Bombay, Sir George Sydenham Clarke laid down the foundation of this historic structure.  Apollo Bunder was displaced and completely realigned to accommodate construction of the building. Construction started in 1920 and completed in 1924.  The cost of construction was huge; 21 lakhs rupees of those times!

 

Passing of the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry was the First ever major event which took place at this historical monument. Ironically, Gateway of India was the point from where last troop of British left India which marked complete end of British colonial rule in India.
