Built in 1952, Jehangir Art Museum is administered by the Bombay Art Society. Renowned Parsi businessman Cowasji Jehangir donated all the cost incurred on construction of this beautiful building. The work exhibit here gets unending media attention and importance.
The Structure
Sir Cowasji Jehangir donated a huge amount of Rs. 400,000 in the year 1911 to build this structure. The Jehangir hall of the Gallery is designed by George Wittet. George Wittet was the British architect who designed the Gateway of India in Mumbai. Jehangir Hall was the part of Institute of Science, initially. Later in 1996, Museum of Modern Art was established in the same hall with an area of 20,000 square feet. The cost incurred in this conversion was a whooping Rs. 33,000,000.
Jehangir Art Museum is among the protected heritage structures of India. There is no permission to make any structural changes inside the structure and no change appearance of its façade. A new museum is also constructed inside the original structure. It was designed by the architect, Romi Khosla. It is a four split level galleries, a seminar room, bookshop and a café. This part of museum is managed by The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Delhi.
