Introduction:
One of the most popular national parks in Nepal, the Chitwan National Park is situated in the sub-tropical inner Terai lowlands of southern Nepal. Lying between Shivalik and Mahabharat mountain ranges, it is the flood plain of three rivers Rapti, Reu and Narayani. This wildlife sanctuary in Nepal also covers the unspoilt area of the Churiya hills, ox-bow lakes that have a distinctive ecosystem of significant value. The park was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1984.
Wildlife:
Chitwan is actively engaged in the scientific study of several species of wild flora and fauna. Covered with Sal trees and tall grasses, the park houses over 50 species of mammals. It also serves as a natural habitat of endangered animals like Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinoceros and gharial crocodile. The park secures endangered species such as gaur, wild elephant, four horned antelope, striped hyena, pangolin, Gangetic dolphin, monitor lizard, and python. Other animals found in the park include sambar, chital, hog deer, barking deer, sloth deer, common leopard, ratel, palm civet, wild dog, langur and rhesus monkeys.
Among 450 species of birds, the park provides safe haven for endangered birds like the Bengal florican, giant hornbill, lesser florican, black stork and white stork. Common birds spotted are peafowl, red jungle fowl, and different species of egrets, herons, kingfishers, flycatchers and woodpeckers. In a wildlife tour in Nepal, the best bird watching time is in March and December.
History:
Before 1950, Chitwan Valley used to be the venue of big hunting games of Nepali rulers for 104 years. It was an exclusive hunting reserve for the hereditary Prime Ministers of the Rana family and their guests. People from England and India used to be invited and huge numbers of tigers and rhinos were killed.
In 1963, the southern area of the Rapti River was segregated as a rhinoceros sanctuary. In 1970, His late Majesty King Mahendra approved the creation of Chitwan National Park for preserving the rich wildlife in Nepal.
