Located in Central Himalayas, Langtang National Park is the most unblemished highland sanctuary yet the nearest to bustling Kathmandu city. Established in 1976, it extends 32 kilometres north up to Nepal- Tibet border, forming the upper catchment areas of Nepal’s two largest rivers, Trishuli and Koshi. From 1500 metres, Mount Langtang reaches a height of up to 7234 metres that makes the Langtang National Park, ecologically diverse.
Langtang National Park is one of the famous wildlife sanctuaries in Nepal that preserved natural surroundings, protecting endangered wildlife. Several ethnic groups co-exist with nature in Langtang, following traditional practices to protect resources.
Vegetation:
With varying climatic conditions and complicated topography, the Central Himalayan region has facilitated thick vegetation. Subtropical forest, temperate oak and pine forests at mid-level, with alpine scrub and grasses are substituted by bare rocks and snow in the higher reaches. Blue Pine, Hemlock, Spruce, Oak, Chir Pine, Maple, Fir and Rhododendron are the main forest species in the deep gorges of Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola. Larch, a rare deciduous conifer is found in lower Langtang.
Wildlife:
One fourth of Langtang area provides habitat for wide range of animals. Lower Langtang Valley houses the endangered Red Panda, Wild Boar, Himalayan Black Bear, Ghoral, Grey Langur and Leopard. Further up in the Alpine hillsides, the Himalayan Tahr, Musk Deer and Snow Leopard can be spotted.
Langtang is a major transit route for migratory birds. Above Langtang, Gosainkund serves as one of temporary Nepal wildlife sanctuaries for birds like the Impeyan, Tragopan and Kalij Pheasants. Rare Himalayan Hony Guides have been sighted with the Ibis, Tibetan Snow Cock and Snow Partridge.

Gosainkunda: Believed to be created by Lord Shiva, Gosainkunda is an area of high altitude lakes, thronged by Hindu pilgrims during Janai Purnima festival.
Helambu Area: Upper forested hillsides house scenic villages inhabited by Sherpas and Tamangs, Tibet emigrants.
Visiting Time:
Best time to visit Langtang National Park, Nepal is springtime (February to late April) and autumn (late September to late November). With clear weather, one can have scenic views with colourful Rhododendrons, blooming at their best.
How to Reach:
8 hours Public bus/Taxi ride from Kathmandu to Dhunche, the Park Head Quarters through Trisuli Bazaar. There are alternate routes too.
