  • The world’s highest national park at 9700 feet, Sagarmatha National Park is located north-east of Kathmandu in the Kumbu region of Nepal. Sagarmatha National Park comprises of a large Everest region housing the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest or Sagarmatha with rugged mountains, glaciers, valleys and deep gorges of the Himalayas. Covering 1148 square kilometers, it extends across rivers and the ethnic Sherpa homeland, Khumbu.

    Interlinked with Buddhism, Sherpa settlements are Namche Bazar, Khunde, Thame, Khumjung, Pangboche and Phortse. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1979 for its untouched natural beauty with a balanced ecosystem, Sagarmatha is among famous sanctuaries in Nepal.

  • Wildlife:
    In a wildlife tour in Nepal, one can spot endangered animals like the Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, Wild Yak, Red Panda, Lynx and Himalayan Black Bear. The Himalayan Tahrs, Deer, Langur Monkeys, Hares, Mountain Foxes, Martens and Himalayan wolves are also on the decline. Other mammals include Jackal, Weasels, Marten, Common Langur and the Himalayan Mousehare.

  • Sagarmatha National park is home to about 118 species of birds. Common birds include the Impeyan Pheasant, Red/ Yellow billed Coughs and Cheer/Blood Pheasant. Rare varieties are the Snow Cock /Pigeon. Moderately sighted birds are Himalayan Griffon, Lammergier, Snow Partridge and Skylark.

    Nepal wildlife sanctuaries like the Sagarmatha is broken up with deep rivers and glaciers, Sagarmatha National Park has pine and hemlock forests at the lower forested zone. Rhododendron, Birch, Pine, Bamboo, Juniper and Silver Fir trees can be found up till a height of 4000 metres. The Upper Zone vegetation is limited to Lichens and Mosses beyond which is the Arctic region where no plant can grow. Rhododendrons and other flora bloom in bright colours in spring and the monsoons.
