
Located in central Nepal at a distance of 198 km west of Kathmandu, Pokhara is the sub-metropolitan city in this mountainous country. After Kathmandu and Biratnagar, Pokhara is the third largest city of the nation. One of the most popular tourist destinations within the country, Pokhara has many sightseeing attractions like ancient temples, palaces, lakes and more.
Pokhara in Nepal is located on the northwest corner of the Pokhara valley which is the part of Seti Gandaki valley. On the valley floor, Seti River and its tributaries have etched attractive canyons which can be seen from a high viewpoint. This is the only place where one can see abrupt elevation of mountains; from 1000m to over 7500m. From Pokhara, you can see the breathtaking views of many Himalayan peaks such as Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu ranges.
One of the main attractions in Pokhara landscape is the Phewa Lake. There are three caves namely, Mahendra, Bat and Gupteswor. Then there is fall named as Patale Chhango or Devi's fall. Pokhara has highest rates of precipitation due to the sharp rise in altitude. On the south, Pokhara flanks Phewa Lake and on the north, city touches to foot of Annapurna Mountains. Though climate of the city is sub-tropical but temperatures are moderate due to sharp elevation. You can go for Pokhara travel in any season.
Pokhara is an old city which used to lie on the trading route between India and Tibet. It was part of the 24 kingdoms of Nepal which were ruled by Shah Dynasty. Newars from Bhaktapur were invited to Pokhara by the King of Kaski to promote the trade in that region. Their legacy can be seen in the architecture of the city. They also brought many dances with them. From Kathmandu; Hindus came and spread their culture and heritage in the city. Mewars and Gurung people also lived here.
Pokhara valley also had refugee camps for people from Tibet which later became their settlements. They also had their different culture which can be distinguished from other cultures very easily. Until 1968, there was no road to Pokhara. It can be reached on foot only. According to Pokhara travel guide, it was a kind of mystical city for outsiders.
