Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is truly one of the most amazing cities in the desert state of Rajasthan, named after Maharaja Jaisal of the Bhatti Rajput clan, who built the city in 1156. On the caravan and trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, Jaisalmer witnessed its golden age from the 12th century. It is a city redolent with the fragrance of a bygone era, with its yellow sandstone architecture, which stands out in the arid desert landscape. On any Rajasthan tour, one must see the Golden City as it is called, which has imposing palaces and havelis with intricate carvings, latticed windows and jharokas (balconies). These splendid structures are living proof of the creative artistry of the Rajasthan stonemasons.

Jaisalmer Fort or Sonar Quila

The main attraction in Jaisalmer is the Jaisalmer Fort or Sonar Quila. Perched atop the Trikuta Hills, the fort is a mix of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles. No travel guide to Rajasthan can overlook this striking landmark, within whose walls people still reside, making it the only populated fort in India. Inside the fort, there are havelis, palaces and many Jain temples, which were built during the 12th to 15th centuries.

Havelis

The numerous havelis of Jaisalmer must surely be the next important on any Rajasthan tour. The city is dotted with these mansions, of which Nathmalji’s Haveli is a remarkable 5-storied building with beautiful floral, geometric and animal carvings. Salim Singh's Haveli and Patwon ki Haveli are other outstanding examples of Jaisalmer’s unique architecture.

The Desert Cultural Centre and the Tazia Tower are other attractions in Jaisalmer. The Gadsisar Lake built in 1367 is another charming spot, which should be a part of a Rajasthan tour.

Jaisalmer Environs

The special feature of any Rajasthan tour is that there is no end to the sightseeing. Situated just 2 km from Jaisalmer is the Bhattiani Rani Temple a Hindu place of worship. A memorial to a 19th century Bhatti princess, the temple is in the custody of the Manganiyars who are Muslim musicians. They sing songs about the Rani and the stories of the ancient city of Jaisalmer.

Just 43 Km away from Jaisalmer is the Desert National Park, which has several wildlife species like sand grouse, falcon, vulture, desert fox and chinkara besides the endangered great Indian bustard. The desert town of Barmer is also worth a visit on any tour of Jaisalmer. Barmer is well known for its handicrafts, woodcarvings, block printed textiles and carpet weaving.
