Ranthambhore National Park is one of the most famous national parks in India located in Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan. The Government of India in 1955 established it as a game sanctuary and in 1973 declared as the Project Tiger Reserve. It got its national park status in 1980. The park is named after the Ranthambore fortress located inside the park and Ranthambore is one of the most visited national parks in northern India. The total area of the park is 392 square kilometers and it is watered by two rivers namely Banas and Chambal. Inside the park several lakes are found.

The main attractions of Ranthambore National Park are its tiger and bird population. Tourists visit this park mainly for tiger viewing and bird watching. The main faunas of this park include Tigers, Leopards, Striped Hyenas, Sambar deer, Chital, Nilgai, Common or Hanuman langurs, Macaques, Jackals, Jungle cats, Caracals, Sloth bears, Black bucks, Rufoustailed Hare, Indian Wild Boar, Chinkara, Common Palm Civets, Indian Flying Foxes, Indian Foxes, Indian Gerbilles, Indian Mole Rats, Indian Porcupines, Longeared Hedgehogs, Small Indian Civets and Common mongoose. It has also a wide variety of reptiles.
Birds of Ranthambore Park
The water bodies and terrain of the park are a home to a wide variety of native and migrant birds. A variety of 272 species are found in this park. The locations best for bird watching are Malik Talao, the Ranthambore Fort, Rajbagh Talao, Padam Talao and Jhalra. The major birdlife of the park include Graylag Goose, Woodpeckers, Indian Gray Hornbills, Common Kingfishers, Bee Eaters, Cuckoos, Parakeets, Asian Palm Swift, Owl, Nightjars, Pigeon, Dove, Herons, Bitterns, Flamingos, Ibis, Pelicans, Storks, Pittas, Shrikes, Treepies, Crows, Orioles, Cuckoo-Shrikes, Minivets, Drongos, Flycatchers, Ioras, Wood Shrikes, Munias, Bulbul, Mynas, Falcons etc.
Floras of the Park
The floras of Ranthambore National Park are mainly dry deciduous type with a wide variety of 300 types. The majority of the floras belong to the species like Am (Magnifera iIndica), Imli (Tamarindicus indica), Babul (Accasia nilotica), Banyan (F icus benghalensis) 5. Ber (Zizyphus mauritania), Dhak or Chila (flame of the forest){Butea monosperma}, Dhok (Anogeossis pendula), Jamun (Syzygium cumini), Kadam (Authocephalus cadamba) and Khajur (Phoenix sylvestris).
