Imagine a small city amidst the vast expanse of desert and suddenly you are met with a surprising spectacle of beautifully decked camels and cattles. This dear guest is the beautiful, ancient city of “Pushkar” located in the North-western front of Rajasthan. While the city itself is very close to Ajmer, it is about 150 Kms away from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. When you step foot into the suburbs of Pushkar you will be instantly hit with the spiritual ambience of the several Hindu temples that surround the city at almost every nook and corner. And if you have done some research about the place, and decided that you wanted to be here during October or November then you are surely in for a mesmerizing experience. The experience is lo & behold, the Pushkar Camel Fair, which for decades has attracted travellers from all corners of India and beyond. The Pushkar Camel Fair is a trade fair where traders showcase cattle and domesticated animals like camels, horses, cows etc. for auction. What follows this fair is a cultural spectacle as activities like tug-of-war, longest moustache competition, folk music and dance amongst others take place. The Pushkar Camel Fair usually takes place in the Hindu month of Kartik, which is between the months of October and November.
The suburbs of Pushkar, every year witness the culturally extravagant Pushkar Camel Fair during the winter months. Tourists from all corners of India and beyond come to experience the fair and its eccentric offerings. This year the fair dates have been announced and we suggest you gear up for a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will surely leave you baffled.
The Pushkar Camel Mela is the largest camel fair in the world where traders bring their bejewelled animals for unique auctions and equally unique activities. The fair witnesses close to 30,000+ camels being brought in for several purposes which includes trading, attractions, competitions amongst others.
Besides the trade that takes place, several cultural activities like tug-of-war, magic shows, fancy dress competitions, folk dance and music are the main attractions of the Pushkar Camel Mela. The fair also hosts several intriguing Indian sports competitions like Kabadi, where the locals play against the visitors (mostly tourists).
Visitors of the Pushkar fair can also get themselves a dose of local “fanfare” with competitions like Turban Tying (a version of fastest fingers, eh :)) and Tilak competition. Besides all the intrigue of Pushkar Mela, one competition that really stands out for the visitors is the Bride and Groom competition mainly held for foreigners who are visiting the fair. This specific event is hosted by a government body, the tourism department of Rajasthan a.k.a Rajasthan Tourism. The Pushkar fair with its lineup of out-of-the-world experiences really stands out for visitors both local and international.
Touring Pushkar is going to be so rewarding that you will love to come back for the experience every single year! As for this year, the Pushkar Camel Fair 2025 will be held during the Hindu month of Kartik and will start from 30th October ending on 5th of November.
