In the scorching heat of Rajasthan’s desert sands, a chirpy peppy summer festival is organised in the solo hill station of the state, Mount Abu. It is to commemorate the onset of summer season in the place, organised annually in the month of May by the joint initiative of the tourism department, the municipal board and the district administration. It begins on the auspicious day of Budh Poornima as to include a religious element to the festival of gaiety and cheer all around.
In more ways than one, Mount Abu’s USP lies in the fact that its people are extraordinarily buoyant, warm and hospitable towards one and all. The festival primarily celebrates this zeal and vigour of the place jeopardizing it with its cultural shades and avant garde like locations.
The three day long fest commences in a grand fashion with a ‘Mount Abu Carnival’ or a ceremonial procession, which starts from the RTDC Hotel Shikhar and eventually, assembles at the Nakki Lake Chowk. Nakki Lake is a very famous one of the city, which is significant for the belief that it came into existence when the Gods digged the lake- bed with their nails or the ‘nakh’ and thus, the name Nakki followed. There is a beautiful riveting serenading, which takes place post the procession and then, the traditional folk music and dance performances like Ghoomar, Gair and Dhap etc. by renowned professional artists follow soon. The first day of the fest paints an enchanting picture, which leaves the visitors and participants waiting and eager for the second day.
The next two days are even more fun and exciting in terms of a good number of engaging activities like the several different competitions happening among the people, which include the Skating Race, Skater’s Show, CRPF Band Show, Tug of War, Horse Race, Boat Race, Panihari Matka Race and Deepdan. All these interesting, fun-filled events add to the joyous charismatic appeal of the fest and people are seen immersed in the amusing cultural- social sea of the city. Where the beginning is such a stupendous one, the finale is further exhilarating with a resplendent show of fireworks. One is certain to feel the refreshing soothing vibes in the tranquillity of the Nakki Lake and the harmony of the hill station and its rhythmic panoramic environs.
