Thimphu

Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan known for its various tourist attractions and it is the most populas district of the kingdom. The Thimphu in Bhutan is spreading across the Wang Chhu’s river valley’s western slopes and the main properties of the city are government offices and various commercial centers including shops, retail arcades, restaurants, public buildings, etc. Most of the buildings of Thimphu city are built in traditional style where Buddhist paintings and motifs are dominant features.

Monasteries in Thimphu:

The famous monasteries of Thmphu valley are Dechenphu, Tango and Cheri monasteries.The moansteries are centers of Buddhist religion and a good number of monks are resided here.

Temples in Thimphu Valley:

Changangkha Lhakhang is an old temple in the Thimphu Valley built in dedication to Avalokiteshvara. Zangthoperi Lhakhang is another famous temple in Thimphu and it has a charm of its frescos and art treasures. This site was an earlier battleground.

The National Memorial Stupa:

It is a famous prayer centre for the locals. This Stupa was built in 1974 to immortalize the third king of Bhutan.

Museums in Thimphu:

The National Folk Heritage Museum is a home to various traditional art and culture showcasing the rural life. Exhibitions and music concerts are held at this venue. The Textile Museum has a good collection of the Bhutanese textiles.

Government buildings:

Trashi Chhoe Dzong is one of the historic buildings renovated later due to severe damage caused by fire and earthquake. This Dzong accommodate both the monastic and civil bodies. It is the main centre of the national government and monastic body and it was totally renovated and extended after the acceptance of Thimphu as nation’s capital.
Simtokha Dzong was built in 1629 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and the country's main Dzongkha language learning institute is located here. It is just 5km distance from Thimphu.

Parks and Preserves:

There are three parks in Thimphu valley which are considered as tourist sites of Thimphu, Bhutan. The parks are Preserves (home of national animal of the Bhutan), Botanical garden and Coronation Park.

Zorig Chusum School of Traditional Arts:

Zorig Chusum School of Traditional Arts is the traditional crafts centre located near the national library and the thirteen arts are paintings, carpentry, wood carving, sculpture, casting, metal work, bamboo carving, gold & silver work, weaving, embroidery, masonry, leather work and paper making are kept here.

Shopping Centers:

The shopping centers, Bhutan are also considered as one of the most famous Thimphu tourists spots in the country which are displaying the Bhutanese products and handicrafts. The centers are Yarkay Central, Blue Poppy Bhutanese, weekend market, Gagyel Lhundrup Weaving Centre, Handicrafts Emporium, Lungta and Traditional Carpets.
